about

Back in the 90s, up and down the I-95 corridor - Philly to Boston, I may have already moved to Berkley CA, but touring with the Special Sauce, college shows, rocking little clubs and sudden festivals - there’s Run DMC, there’s Cypress Hill, Black Crows, HORD runs, too much fun kids. It was a blurry time for real. The people who ran our show back then were real son of bitches - they barely let me know where we were going to be, always at the last minute. We’ve always rocked despite - that’s the legacy of our music.

But it was a colossal pain in the ass to make plans, especially for a free-form jazz session in NYC. What they considered recreation at best, a musical infidelity at worst, I considered - still do, a vital sustenance for battling the trappings of popularity, for the reinvigoration of sonic creativity. It was lucky when I could tag up with my Boston compatriot Dave Mullen in Brooklyn where he’d relocated. Happening man.

It was a summer evening, must have been 98, 99, that was a time. The stars aligned and I lugged my German flat back bass down past the Williamsburg Bridge, to Mullen's pad. We played that loft style rock-swing, it was just the living area of the apartment he shared with his old lady and her kid . . . they weren’t married yet at that time. We scooched the kitchen table over for the drums, it must have been a good sized apartment, by NYC standards ‘cause Dave had his Rhodes (and tenor and dual horns!!), and we had vibist Jimmy Goodman with a full rig. I threw my Sony WM-D6C on the couch and propped the AT stereo mic between the cushions. Sadly I don’t recall the drummer - he’s swingin’ man, for sure. Sounds like we’re having fun.

It was just a session for our own enjoyment, that’s what it is to me. To play the music free of any ego, our own or that of the listener, and play just for the divine perceiver that lives between the quanta of this reality. But I’m posting it here for your enjoyment too, it brings me back to that time and I celebrate those days in all their imperfection and foolishness.

I came by the original master CD the other day, which I never got around to pressing. All songs are original improvised compositions, except when they are not, then the material is used for educational purposes only.
